Data centers in Charles County, Maryland: 1 project mapped

TeraWulf, a bitcoin miner turned AI data center builder, plans a data center campus of up to a gigawatt, about 1,000 megawatts of power, at the Morgantown Generating Station on the Potomac in Newburg. Federal regulators approved its purchase of the plant on July 29, 2026, but only the change of owner: building data centers, a gas line or new generators there would each need a separate federal filing, giving opponents another chance to object. Data centers are not an allowed use anywhere in Charles County today.
The plant's coal units shut in 2022; about 216 megawatts of 1970s oil-fired units remain on roughly 260 acres. TeraWulf wants to restart it on natural gas, starting with 500 megawatts, though the site is about 15 miles from any gas pipeline. The Baltimore Banner reported the campus would use more power than all of Baltimore. Public Citizen, the Sierra Club, Maryland's Office of People's Counsel and the Charles County Against Data Centers Coalition all fought the sale.
The county has refused to open the door. On July 21 the commissioners dropped a zoning change that would have allowed data centers in industrial zones, after the Planning Commission twice recommended against it; at the June 1 hearing opponents packed the room chanting "no data centers." Staff will instead set up a task force and hire an outside consultant, and any new rule would need a new bill.
